JIMMY ENGINEER

Artist and Social Crusader

Born on 13th August 1954 in Loralai Baluchistan, Pakistan in a Parsi family, Jimmy Engineer was to grow up to break all barriers of caste, creed and religion. Jimmy completed his schooling from St. Anthony's High School, Lahore. After a brief interlude at the Forman Christian College, Lahore, he spent three years with the National College of Arts. He then turned professional in 1976. His equal relevance to the rich as well as the poor, literate or illiterate, religious or atheistic, speaks volumes for his dedication and honesty. He can bring succour and relief to all those in need. Although an artist by profession, his true passions in life are his fellow human beings and their welfare. Much of his efforts for supporting individuals as well as institutions remain undocumented and unsung.

His penchant for social service, however, in no way detracts him from his artistic performance, for his art has received acclaim nationally as well as internationally. His canvases on the 1947 holocaust depict in graphic detail the suffering, bloodshed and sacrifices that ushered in the birth of Pakistan. This pioneering effort is intended to capture the imagination of successive generation of Pakistan and imbue them with a similar urge and desire for sacrifice and dedication to the country. These canvases and murals have been exhibited extensively in the country as well as abroad and have won him fame and fortune. The latter he spends generously on charitable work and is content to lead an ascetic life.

A peaceful crusader for the oppressed, disabled, mentally handicapped, impoverished and generally for who so ever needs him. Jimmy has the rare ability to communicate with people from all walks of life. He has adopted an unusual but highly effective method for creating awareness about issues close to his heart. His numerous walks, have taken him, over the length and breadth of this country in pursuit of diverse objectives mostly in the context of promotion of human rights and human dignity, enhancement of quality of life and the creation of an equitable civil society in this country.

He paints a variety of themes, and has done landscapes, still-lifes, cultural paintings, religious paintings, seascapes, calligraphy, philosophy of colours, miniatures, abstract, historical paintings, paintings on war and philosophical paintings as well and of course, self-portraits.

Many of his paintings are in private collections in Italy, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Russia, India, China, Yugoslavia, Japan, Australia, Canada, England, Korea, Sri-Lanka, Germany, Singapore, Sweden, Nairobi, Belgium, Abu-Dhabi, Dubai, Austria, Spain, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Turkey, USA, and of course in Pakistan.

He has painted over 3000 original paintings, 1000 Calligraphies, over 1500 drawings and over 700,000 prints are in private collections in more than 60 countries.

Started the anti-beggary campaign in Karachi that motivated other Provinces to start similar campaigns. Created awareness that deserving handicapped beggars should be rehabilitated at centres that would provide them their day-to-day needs and would also teach them skills to enable them to lead productive lives.

Created awareness about drug addiction and started a campaign so that drug addicts could be rehabilitated.

Was instrumental in creating the first Judicial Complex in Pakistan outside the Central Jail, Karachi by raising funds to the tune of Rs. 4.5 million through Khadim Ali Shah Bukhari Foundation. Four courts have been built at the complex so that women, youthful offenders and other jail inmates can get speedy trial because the jail authorities do not have proper security and transport to take the inmates to other courts far away.

Provided a large number of playing and sporting goods to the youthful offenders and women prisoners so that they could have healthy recreation. For the first time toys were provided to the children who were born in Jail and were only a few years old.

Has helped countless widows and young children with financial and material assistance.

Has distributed medicines amongst poor patients and has visited many hospitals to give solace and comfort to the ailing humanity.

Launched food for special children at Salt and Pepper Village restaurant. Every month blind, handicapped and special children will have free lunch at the restaurant and we hope that other hotels and restaurants will support this noble cause and offer the same kind of services to the special children.
